How to Pack Your Apartment for Moving in 7 Easy Steps
You’ve decided to make a move from your apartment to a new location. This is a big decision that is going to change your life. Now comes the tough part, packing. You probably have a date that you need to move out by. Don’t get overwhelmed with the process. Utilize these seven easy steps that will help you get organized and packed in no time at all.
1. Start Early
Don’t wait until the last minute to start packing. Start as soon as you can. Even if you start going through items to get rid of, this is a step in the right direction. Stress will start to creep up in those last couple of weeks before the big moving day. Have most of your packing done by that point. This will leave you time to worry about the unforeseen circumstances that always tend to creep up.
2. Go Through Your Items
Now is the time to get rid of some things that you no longer use. Go through your clothing, getting rid of stuff you haven’t worn in a few seasons. Books, movies, kitchen gadgets and products are all items that you can decide to donate, throw away or pack for your new location. Try to keep an open mind during this process. Don’t keep what you don’t need.
3. Wrap Items Properly
All of your breakable items should be wrapped in bubble wrap, tissue paper, newspaper or whatever is appropriate. You can even use your blankets, towels or sheets for wrapping items. Enough padding should be placed in between items that they will not break when the boxes are being moved.
4. Label Your Boxes
As you go through items and place things in boxes, make sure that you properly label what is inside. Keep all of your bathroom items together, kitchen items together and so on. This will allow you to unpack easier when moving day arrives.
5. Take Handles Off of Furniture
When your big furniture items get moved out, the handles and knobs can get banged up pretty good. They can also damage the walls of your apartment that you’re moving out of. Store the hardware and knobs in small bags, placing them in the drawers of your furniture.
6. Keep Items Inside of Furniture
If you want to minimize the amount of boxes that you have, see if your movers will move furniture with items inside. This means you could leave your clothing in dresser drawers, minimizing packing all of those items.
7. Keep Important Items Separate
When it comes to items that you are going to need right away, those items should go in their own boxes. They should be the last to be packed, and they should be the last items on the truck. When you get to your destination, you can unpack those immediate necessities even if something comes up and you can’t unload everything else that day.
If you plan ahead, moving can actually be a very simple and straightforward process. Moving is a very exciting journey. Don’t let the stress of packing slow you down or ruin the enjoyment. Also, see if your friends want to help with the process of packing and moving. May as well have company while you pack!
